Terms of use

Version 23, updated 2 November 2026. The same text the app shows under Settings, About, terms and privacy. Privacy policy

Agreement

These terms and the privacy policy are an agreement between you and Sam Zoutay, the developer of Yonder named on its Google Play listing ("we", "us"). By using Yonder you accept them. If you do not accept them, do not use Yonder.

What Yonder is

Yonder sends messages directly between nearby phones over local radios (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct), and relays them through other Yonder phones. It has no account, no server and no operator. We cannot read, store, deliver, moderate or remove anything you or anyone else sends, and we cannot see who uses Yonder.

Who may use Yonder

You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age for using online services without a parent's consent where you live if that is higher, and able to agree to these terms.

Not an emergency service

A message arrives only when a chain of Yonder phones exists between you and the recipient. Yonder shows what it knows about each message (waiting, sent, delivered, read) and never claims more, but it cannot promise that a message arrives, or when. Do not rely on Yonder in an emergency or for anything where a lost or late message could cause harm; contact local emergency services by any means you have. The SOS check-in sends a message to the people you choose, and only to them; it does not call or alert any emergency service.

Your phone carries for others

While Carry for others is on (Settings → Network → Carrying for others), your phone holds other people's sealed messages and pieces of their files, which it cannot read, for a limited time and within the storage you allow, and passes them on. After a restart it does this before you unlock the phone unless you switch that off in Settings → Network. You agree to carry them while this is on. The mesh is give and take: if you switch carrying off, other phones do not carry your messages either, and yours go only directly, when the person is within reach.

What you send

You are responsible for everything you send or share with Yonder. Messages go to their recipients' phones, where they can be kept, copied or shown to others; a deletion for everyone reaches only the phones it meets. In a group, what you write is also handed by members' phones to people who join later, unless the group's admin has turned that off (it is on by default, and the chat says which). Do not share someone else's private information or pictures without their permission.

Acceptable use

Do not use Yonder to break the law where you are; to harass, threaten, stalk, defraud or impersonate anyone; to send content that sexualises minors, promotes violence or infringes others' rights; to send spam or flood the mesh; or to interfere with other people's use of it (for example with jamming, altered apps that ignore Yonder's limits, or software that pretends to be Yonder). The tools you have are in the app: block people, decline requests, mute chats, hide yourself.

Licence

Yonder is private software owned by its developer; it is not open source. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Yonder on devices you own or control, for as long as you follow these terms. You may not sell, rent or redistribute Yonder, or copy, change or reverse-engineer it except where the law allows this regardless of these terms. Yonder's name, look and code stay ours, and we keep every right these terms do not give you. Yonder includes open-source software that is licensed to you under its own licences (Settings → About); those parts belong to their authors, who own no part of Yonder.

Your keys and your data

Your identity is a pair of cryptographic keys kept only on this phone. Yonder makes no backups of any kind. If the phone is lost or reset, or Yonder's data is deleted, your keys and chats on it are gone and nobody, including us, can recover them.

Encryption and radio laws

Yonder uses strong encryption and local radios (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct). Some countries restrict the use or import of encryption or radio equipment; you are responsible for following the laws that apply where you use Yonder.

Other services

Yonder is distributed through Google Play, and the map uses public map services while you are online (see the privacy policy). Their own terms apply to them; we are not responsible for them.

Paid features

If we ever offer paid features, they will be sold through Google Play and governed by Google Play's terms. Messaging between phones stays free.

No warranty

Yonder is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we give no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that Yonder is fit for a particular purpose, uninterrupted, secure or free of errors, or that any message is delivered.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost messages, data, profits or opportunities, arising from your use of Yonder or from content others send, and our total liability for any claim about Yonder is limited to the amount you paid us for Yonder in the twelve months before the claim, or 50 US dollars if you paid nothing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and nothing takes away rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived.

Indemnity

To the extent the law allows, you will compensate us for claims, losses and costs that arise from what you send with Yonder or from your breaking these terms.

Ending

You can stop using Yonder at any time: Settings → Storage → Erase everything on this phone, or uninstall it. We may change, suspend or stop offering Yonder or its updates at any time. The sections about what you send, no warranty, limitation of liability, indemnity and the law that applies continue after you stop.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the laws of the country (and state or province, where relevant) in which the developer named on the Google Play listing is established, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and disputes go to the courts there. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live and may bring proceedings in its courts.

If part of these terms does not apply

If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a part is not giving it up. These terms and the privacy policy are the whole agreement about Yonder between you and us.

Changes

We may update these terms. If a change affects your rights or obligations, Yonder shows the terms again and asks you to agree before you continue. Other updates, such as clearer wording, are made without asking you again; the date at the top shows the latest.
